Job Summary

The Department of Film, Television, and Media (FTVM) in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan is seeking applicants for a full-time LEO Lecturer III position in the area of Television and Studio Production to begin August 25, 2025. This is a non-tenure track position with a university year appointment period (i.e., runs September 1 through May 31 each year).

The initial appointment period will be one (1) to four (4) years (depending on qualifications), and the appointment may be renewed (based on programmatic need, funding, and performance). The appointment is subject to final approval by the college.

Responsibilities*

We seek an instructor who has proven and significant experience in producing and/or directing multi camera modes of studio production (including live formats like sitcoms, sports, news, sketch comedy, drama, talk or variety shows). Duties include teaching five courses and a seven-week mini course each academic year over the course of two semesters. Generally, the assignment is three courses in one semester and two and a mini course in the second semester. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the position also requires departmental service.

Competitive candidates will have the following experience:

  • Evidence of teaching experience at the university level, including syllabus design, lesson planning, and student mentoring
  • Writing skills that are applicable to various genres of studio production.
  • A passion for mentoring diverse students
  • A vision for growing studio production in our department and enhancing curriculum content
  • Experience working with actors and on-screen talent
  • A demonstrated leadership ability in a creative and collaborative environment

The Department of Film, Television, and Media offers a diverse range of courses in screenwriting, cinema and media studies, and film, television, and new media production. We have both undergraduate and PhD programs of study. The faculty include nationally and internationally recognized teachers, scholars, screenwriters, and filmmakers who are renowned for their accomplishments and impact in their respective fields. The department has its own library which houses an expansive film and screenplay collection and the Screen Arts Mavericks and Makers Collection which holds the personal papers and ephemera of Orson Welles, Robert Altman, John Sayles, Jonathan Demme, and Nancy Savoca, among others. Required Qualifications*

The candidate must have a bachelors degree and either an advanced degree (MA or MFA) or a minimum of ten years experience working professionally in television production with a strong record of achievement, prior to the start date of the position.

The candidate must have the ability to work collaboratively with faculty members across the department regarding curriculum, faculty hiring and many other domains of departmental service and possess a willingness to serve the university and the profession.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
