Position Summary

This position exists primarily to provide instructional and technical support for the Design Department's faculty, staff, and students. It includes, but is not limited to, providing first-level technical support for the department's computers, peripheral devices, print lab hardware/machines, and software; installing and configuring software; administering the departmental server and its processes; and supporting the general instructional process including providing training and documentation on the use of the department's technologies. This position also maintains the Print Production lab including computers, machines/equipment, hardware, software; obtains 3rd-party repairs as needed; and training and supervision of student print lab assistants. Additional responsibilities include inventory control and purchasing supplies/consumables; managing statistical data and reports; maintaining safety data, general recordkeeping, and supervising student lab monitors during the summer term and/or monitoring the Open Labs when no student lab monitor is available. The position is critical to the success of an increasingly complex and highly technical department.

Principal Accountabilities

Classroom/Lab Support

  • Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair departmental lab equipment, Mac computers, and peripheral hardware.


Print Production Lab Support

  • Maintain Print Lab, its equipment/machines, and perform first-level repairs when possible.
  • Obtain external service/repairs when necessary.
  • Provide reports to the chairperson


Instructional Support

  • Provide faculty and staff with technical support and training on the operation and use of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist faculty with classroom presentations on the operation of lab hardware, software, or processes.


Server Administration

  • Configure, maintain, and administer the Design Department's Macintosh server.


Purchasing, Inventory Control, Safety Communication, Statistical Data & Record-keeping

  • Purchase and track receipt of supplies, consumables, capital equipment, and repair services. Maintain departmental chemical inventories and related safety communications.

All Other Accountabilities

  • Maintain and update expert knowledge and skills in technology and issues in visual communications fields including an awareness of relevant emerging technologies and its potential impact on the department's instructional processes.
  • Work to keep departmental labs conducive to the instructional processes. Initiate work requests when necessary.
  • Research, advise, and initiate Capital Equipment purchases.
  • Provide reports to the chairperson on the activities above where appropriate and as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree required; Degree in IT preferred but related background or experience will be considered
  • Minimum of 1 year work experience required; laboratory experience preferred
  • Expert knowledge and practical skills on Macintosh Server Administration; Macintosh, and UNIX operating systems; and various software applications used in the department and visual communications field required; Expert troubleshooting skills on equipment, hardware, software, and operating systems preferred
  • Working knowledge and skill in the graphic arts and visual communications industries including Digital Prepress and current industry software applications for digital illustration, imaging and pagination required
  • Working knowledge and skill in the web-creation, animation and multimedia development, 3D Modeling/Printing, and relevant software applications required
  • Outstanding creative problem-solving and organizational skills, project management, recordkeeping, and communication skills are required
  • Strong personal initiative, basic supervisory skills and the ability to handle significant job stress are also important
