The role:

As our safety & wellness manager, you will oversee the region’s safety program, create, adapt and implement safety practices, increase safety awareness in crews and work to reduce risks. You will also be responsible for conducting trainings, inspections, assessments and investigations, resolving issues and making recommendations to improve the effectiveness of ODOT’s safety culture. Hybrid remote work options available! The person in this position will be required to go to the offices in Bend, The Dalles and Klamath Falls for safety meetings and other safety related functions. When in person work is not required, the successful candidate can work remotely.

A day in the life:

  • Manage, implement and continuously evaluate safety and incident prevention programs to reduce risk and improve the agency’s safety rating.

  • Monitor and review facilities, construction, work sites and equipment to identify potential hazards and verify compliance with safety regulations.

  • Serve as a consultant to managers, rehabilitation professionals and workers’ compensation insurance companies.

  • Develop, maintain and revise safety policies, procedures, guidelines and manuals.

  • Conduct investigations related to employee judgment, communication issues and failure to act.

  • Interview managers and staff regarding disciplinary measures and report safety noncompliance.

  • Coordinate and provide safety program training and needs assessments.

  • Requires traveling to offices and locations throughout the state, working in all weather conditions and being on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays for emergency situations.

Minimum qualifications:

Five years of experience in Occupational Health and Safety consultation work in an industrial, manufacturing, government, utilities, institutional, or agricultural setting or in Workers' Compensation insurance loss prevention.

OR

A bachelor's degree in safety, industrial hygiene, or related field; and two years of experience in Workers' Compensation insurance loss prevention or as an occupational health and safety representative in an industrial, manufacturing, government, utilities, institutional, or agricultural setting.

Special qualifications:

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.
