Full Job Description

Position Description
The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Washington, has two (2) full-time academic positions available at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor without tenure (WOT) by reason of funding, to join our faculty group on the clinician-educator pathway. Additional responsibilities include the teaching of residents, fellows, medical students and medical laboratory scientist program undergraduates.

The UW Transfusion Medicine Divisions mission is to deliver the best transfusion medicine care and to advance the field through innovation, excellence, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Our core values are patient care, quality, safety, transparency, and academic integrity.

The Transfusion Medicine Division at the University of Washington provides comprehensive transfusion services across several facilities: Harborview Medical Center (HMC), the regional Level I trauma center; the University of Washington Medical Center Montlake and Northwest campuses (UWMC ML/NW), major academic center with specialties including high-risk obstetrics, solid organ and bone marrow transplants, adult ECMO; and the Fred Hutch Cancer Center (FHCC) inpatient and outpatient clinic. Annually, the division manages the transfusion of approximately 70,000 units, including specialized products like whole blood, granulocytes, and HLA-matched platelets. In addition, we support a pre-hospital transfusion program for Medic One and Airlift Northwest, as well as high-risk obstetrics with intrauterine and neonatal exchange transfusions, and a sickle cell disease program. Our services also provide serology testing and clinical consultation across campuses, with robust interdisciplinary collaboration with Hematology/Oncology, Anesthesia, and Obstetrics. The Patient Blood Management Committee is highly active and expanding. Serving as a referral center for neighboring states, the University of Washington supports a diverse patient population with complex transfusion and serologic needs.

The successful candidate will join the Transfusion Medicine Division faculty, comprising four experienced TM physicians with diverse backgrounds and clinical interests. Responsibilities will include sharing clinical call coverage with fellow faculty, providing consultation for cases such as massive transfusions, compatibility testing, alloimmunization, hemolytic anemias, coagulopathy, and inventory management. The role also involves overseeing operations and quality initiatives for transfusion service laboratories across campuses. The successful candidate will have an active role in patient blood management activities. Additionally, the candidate will engage in teaching, mentoring, and scholarly activities. The estimated effort for this position is approximately 40% clinical coverage, 30% operations and quality oversight, and 30% research, teaching, and mentoring laboratory staff, residents, fellows, and junior faculty.

Assistant Professors WOT are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Associate and Full Professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. This position is full-time and remains open until filled with an anticipated start date of July 1st, 2025, but it is flexible and can be determined by mutual agreement with the successful candidate.

The base salary range for this position will be: Assistant Professors: $19,024 to $22,596 per month ($228,287 to $271,146 annually); Associate Professors: $22,706 to $27,441 per month ($272,482 to $329,287 annually); Professors: $26,486 to $32,456 per month ($317,826 to $389,474 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization.

UW faculty demonstrate the highest standards of professionalism and engage in teaching, research, and clinical service. UW faculty embrace the vision of excellence, collaboration, and integrity. Come join us in one of the most beautiful and exciting locations in the U.S. as we pursue our mission of creatively and durably improving health.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess an M.D., D.O., MD/PhD or foreign equivalent, and should be board-certified in Anatomic or/and Clinical Pathology, Medicine, Pediatrics, Anesthesia or other clinical or surgical specialties, and board eligible or certified in Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking (American Board of Pathology) by time of appointment. Must qualify for a license to practice medicine in Washington state. In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H1-B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
