The Tax Manager is the leader of the tax function for Onward Outdoor Brands (‘Onward’), the parent company of Fleet Feet and Marathon Sports subsidiaries. The position requires a strong tax accountant who is committed to creating a best-in-class tax function that prioritizes accuracy and compliance.
This position will be responsible for all aspects of the consolidated tax environment, including partnership income tax, corporate income tax, sales tax, property tax, annual reporting, and business licensing. This role will manage tax compliance, planning and strategy to minimize tax liabilities and ensure adherence to federal, state and local regulations.
This position requires strong organizational skills to track and handle tax compliance deadlines monthly, quarterly, and annually. The Tax Manager will play a key role in advising on the tax implications of business decisions.
Finally, as a business partner, this role should have strong communication skills, and should collaborate well with Onward’s shareholders, and with external tax partners.

Responsibilities
- Establish and cultivate professional relationships with tax partners and shareholders.
- Support the preparation of Onward’s annual partnership tax return, including preparation of state apportionment work papers and other required support, as well as detailed review of partnership tax return prior to filing.
- Support the preparation of Fleet Feet’s annual corporate tax return, including the preparation of the tax provision and other required support, as well as detailed review of corporate tax return prior to filing.
- Prepare quarterly taxable income estimate for quarterly tax distributions to members and quarterly federal and state estimated tax payments.
- Administer state estimated income tax payments quarterly.
- Serve as the main contact for tax authorities and handle all aspects of federal and state tax correspondence and audits.
- Research and monitor changes in tax legislation and update management on potential impacts to the business.
- Ensure accurate and compliant reporting of corporate tax items, including retained earnings and dividends.
- Prepare and file monthly sales tax returns.
- Work with external partner to ensure timely and accurate filing of annual reports and business licenses.
- Work with external property tax provider to ensure timely and accurate filing of all annual property tax returns.
- Create and maintain a detailed tax calendar that outlines all tax deadlines.
- Create and maintain a detailed tax directory for all online tax portals.
- Create and maintain a detailed tracker for estimated tax payments and overpayment applications.
- Develop and implement internal tax policies and procedures to ensure compliance and reduce risk exposure.
- Work closely with other finance and accounting functions (FP&A, AP, AR) to ensure shared success, including appropriate tax accruals to support financial statement accuracy.
- Participate in budgeting and forecasting processes to provide input on tax-related items and forecast cash flow impacts of tax obligations.
- Other duties as the need arises.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in Accounting
- CPA license preferred
- 3-5 years of demonstrated experience in a tax role, public accounting experience in tax, with a focus on partnership and corporate tax for private entities preferred; retail industry experience is a plus
- Solid understanding with standard concepts, practices, and procedures of tax accounting
- Strong analytical skills and judgment
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel
- High attention to detail
- Deadline driven, flexible, and adaptable
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to and interest in gaining an in-depth understanding of tax regulations affecting partnerships and C corporations, including partnership allocations, Section 704(c) allocations, and other tax provisions.

Additional Requirements: Position requires occasional moving around with light (1-10lbs.) carrying, lifting, pushing or pulling. The position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access files, office equipment, etc. The position is mostly sedentary and requires the employee to have close visual acuity to perform job requirements. The position requires frequent communication with team members and repetitive motion with the hands, wrists and/or fingers while constantly utilizing a computer.
