Software Engineers perform development work across the technology stack (both front-end/back-end expertise). They are versatile in how they can add value, demonstrating the ability to manage the completion of projects that involve databases, back-end services, or the development of front-end applications. They should be able to demonstrate a strong understanding of emerging technologies to support the development of new solutions. Software Engineers understand the full technology stack and underlying applications, services, and databases in order to ensure optimal performance.

This position will require an individual to design, build, enhance, and implement solutions in a fast-paced, Agile environment participating in scrum ceremonies, and working closely with a highly motivated team. This is a new team at Costco and will be fast paced and highly visible, supporting the business goals by being an industry leader in this space.

ROLE

● Supports release planning activities in conjunction with Product Owners and teams.

● Identifies high level requirements to support the definition and refinement of a robust testing strategy.

● Supports the Product Owner with the identification and definition of enablers/work items to support the architectural runway of a given product/application.

● Identifies technical dependencies across several product/application teams to support the implementation of new or enhanced functionality.

● Develops and implements front-end architecture to support user interface concepts.

● Designs, builds, debugs, optimizes, and implements solutions in approved tool sets and databases.

● Develops high quality, efficient, and fault tolerant software.

● Supports, extends, and builds automated CI and CD pipelines.

● Designs and delivers DevSecOps automation for app deployment and testing.

● Uses APM/monitoring tools such as Dynatrace/Splunk and browser tools to perform request purepath/waterfall analysis to identify bottlenecks and suggest improvements.

● Participates in the development and documentation of department standards and best practices, and mentors’ junior engineers.

● Demonstrates a strong understanding of emerging technologies to support the development of new solutions.

● Supports Architects with the design of the overall architecture of a specific product/application; applies principles that promote availability, reusability, interoperability, and security into the design framework.

● Performs development, optimization, and automation activities to support the implementation of a product/application.

● Increases proficiency and understanding of relational and non-relational databases, distributed application architectures, user interfaces and user experience, quality assurance, security concerns, and business value creation.

● Adopts engineering best practices to deliver higher quality and scalable solutions.

● Provides the team with the development strategy, solution recommendations, and estimates for a given product/application.

● Participates in scrum ceremonies (sprint planning, retrospective, demos, stand-ups, backlog refinement, etc.).

● Creates and executes unit tests which validate the code changes made to support the implementation of a user story.

● Uses test-driven development (TDD) practices to assist with the detection/recognition of software defects early in the development process.

● Identifies deficiencies within a product/application’s code-base and opportunities to improve overall code quality.

● Works with team members to move user stories from the development backlog into testing and provides clarification when needed.

● Estimates, plans, and manages all implementation tasks and reports on development progress.

● Collaborates with team members (e.g., Systems Architects, Systems Analysts) to define project specifications; and releases documentation for all phases of the product development cycle from product definition to design, through implementation.

● Conducts peer code reviews for the software changes made by other engineers within a team.

● Adheres to team and departmental development standards.

● Mentors other team members.

● Participates in team planning and activities for improving skills, knowledge, and quality of work.

● Responsible for continued personal growth in the areas of technology, business knowledge, and company policies.

REQUIRED

● 5+ years’ experience or demonstrated equivalence in Full Stack Development.

● 3+ years’ experience or demonstrated equivalence in performing Web and UI development.

● Application development in C#, Java, and JavaScript.

● Possesses a strong understanding of the software development process.

● Strong knowledge of object-oriented concepts and experience working with databases.

● Strong verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate to both technical and Business audiences.

● Willingness to learn third-party applications.

● Demonstrated ability to execute against iteration plans and deliver assignments within scope, schedule, and budget.

● Ability to work with all management levels.

● Possesses high integrity, accountability, a positive attitude, and willing to do what it takes to make the team successful.

● Team player; good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. Creative, likes challenges.

● Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to multitask and prioritize work effectively in a fast-paced working environment.

● Customer-centric focused and dedicated to business partnership while meeting the needs of the business leveraging out of the box functionality without a high degree of customization.

● Able to support off-hours work as required, including weekends, holidays, and on call responsibilities on a rotational basis.

Recommended

● Experience in development of scalable web services in n-tier architecture using C#, Microsoft.Net frameworks.

● Experience working with complex network topologies, including firewalls, API Gateways, load balancers.

● Experience developing Unified UI.

● Experience and understanding of Costco’s business model and legacy systems.

● Ability to listen to and understand business needs.

● Analytical thinker possessing strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.

● Proven experience working within a complex software development environment.

● Deep understanding of business requirements elicitation pursuant to specific programs/projects involved.

● Expertise in utilizing standard documentation tools/utilities.

Pay Range: $150,000 - $190,000, Bonus and Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) Eligible
