Summary:

The HHMI Center for the Advancement of Science Leadership and Culture seeks to make science more accessible and inclusive so that those who advance scientific discoveries reflect the diversity of our society. The Senior Director, Science Leadership and Culture Programs will work closely with the Vice President of Science Leadership and Culture and other senior leaders to achieve the mission and vision of the Center. In this role, you will supervise the Directors of Cultural Innovations, Inclusive Learning, and Equity Centered Partnerships and the corresponding portfolio of programs.

What you'll do:

Strategic Priorities and Supervision

  • Collaborate with Senior Leadership to implement new initiatives and advance existing programs aligned with the Center's strategic plan.

  • Lead and supervise Directors running programs that improve the culture of research and science education, build partnerships to expand scientific talent, and use data to drive strategy and accountability measures.

  • Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team. This includes cultivating a culture of collaboration, innovation, customer service, and professional development.

  • Develop and iterate on Theory of Change analysis for all portfolio programs.

  • Track and report evaluation and impact metrics across portfolio programs, ensuring performance targets are met.

  • Cultivate cross-functional collaborations to improve programs and initiatives. Encourage innovation and a growth mindset in program design and execution.

Programs and Logistics Oversight

  • Manage grant and fellowship competitions, including funding announcements, selection of reviewers, development of review rubrics, and organizing calibration sessions.

  • Supervise the collection of annual program and financial reports, grantee activities, and related policy and procedure enhancement considerations.

  • Provide oversight for grantee and fellow meetings, identifying science education policy issues and themes to be addressed as part of the agenda.

  • Assess the effectiveness of HHMI science education programs.

  • Collaborate with Center Directors and staff to integrate and enhance program effectiveness.

Budgetary Oversight

  • In consultation with the VP and Director of Operations, develop and manage programmatic budgets and recommend funding distribution for programs within a portfolio of $10M+.

What you bring:

  • Ph.D. in physical, life, or behavioral science.

  • Minimum ten years of experience in a combination of grantmaking, program management, portfolio management, and higher education (beyond doctorate).

  • Minimum three years of people management experience. Five years preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience managing large funding mechanisms, ideally in the behavioral or social sciences.

  • Leadership in education or science grantmaking or science education administration.

  • Analytical and quantitative skills related to science education policy, budgeting, and technology.

  • Strong communication skills, particularly in writing and speaking, to represent HHMI at national conferences, meetings, and other settings.

  • The ability to develop imaginative, innovative programs.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of emotional intelligence.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Compensation Range

$212,649.60 (minimum) - $265,812.00 (midpoint) - $345,555.60 (maximum)

Pay Type:

Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
