A Brief Overview
The University of Pennsylvania and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia have a dynamic, multidisciplinary group of investigators applying mRNA technology to prevent and treat herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. The team includes virologists, immunologists, biochemists, and infectious diseases clinicians who care for children and adults.
We are looking for a research technician to work alongside a pediatric infectious diseases physician-scientist, Dr. Angela Desmond, investigating mRNA-lipid nanoparticle vaccines to prevent neonatal herpes. The effects of this disease can range from a more limited skin infection to death or lifelong disability. The project utilizes both mouse models of HSV infection and human sera. The ideal candidate will have laboratory experience and knowledge of virology and/or immunology. Familiarity with laboratory techniques such as ELISAs, tissue culture, plaque assays, and basic mouse handling desired. The technician will be trained in antibody neutralization assays and mouse vaccination, breeding, and HSV infection. Prior experience in any of these techniques is a plus. This is an ideal project for candidates looking to grow their skills in bench and translational infectious diseases research in a collaborative environment.
The ideal candidate for this position will be expected to work a flexible schedule that adjusts to meet the needs of the lab team members.
What you will do
- Performs routine tests / experiments under the direction of principal investigator, supervisor or other designee
- Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed
- Records and checks experiments/ results for completeness and accuracy
- Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log and lab notebooks
- Performs tasks that require familiarity with fundamental techniques and lab equipment
- May assist with planning specific research protocols and procedures
- Maintains office, lab area, solutions, reagents, supplies and equipment, disposes of specimens, media and other materials (using appropriate procedures)
- Assists in care and maintenance of lab equipment
- May coordinate schedules of tests and procedures
- Attends courses, seminars, and lab meetings to expand knowledge of research and laboratory techniques
- Records results, organizes data and maintains lab notebook in an organized manner
- Compiles and helps analyze data, prepares charts, graphs, and results of studies as directed
- Conducts literary searches as directed
Education Qualifications
- High School Diploma / GED Required
- Associate's Degree Preferred
- Bachelor's Degree Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- At least one (1) year of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience Required
- At least two (2) years of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience Preferred
