Job Summary

The Division of Rheumatology is seeking a full-time Research Lab Specialist Intermediate to participate in translational studies of autoimmune disorders, including scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases.

Responsibilities*

  • Perform mRNA extraction, cDNA conversion, and qRTPCR.
  • Maintain primary cell cultures and cell lines for experiments.
  • Process clinical samples including tissue dissociation, cell culture, and cryopreservation.
  • Cryosection frozen tissues and perform immunohistochemistry experiments.
  • Analyze protein expression and cell signaling by western blotting.
  • Collaborate scientifically with colleagues, including training new lab members and supervising/mentoring junior lab staff and undergraduate students.
  • Have an active role in the design and execution of research projects conducting in vivo rodent fibrosis and inflammation experiments. 
  • Execution of surgical procedures related to various models. 
  • Maintain mouse colony, assist with mouse breeding, and perform animal care. 
  • Be able to evaluate results and recommend improvements in research models and methodology.  
  • Responsible for the operation, analysis and troubleshooting of specialized laboratory equipment, and assist others in its operation and calibration. 
  • Perform literature searches and analyze content to improve the quality of the research. Be responsible for writing certain parts of progress reports and manuscripts. 
  • Co-author publications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications*

  • BS in Biology 
  • 4-5 years of experience in a related field of science. 
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted, including relevant undergraduate and graduate student experience
  • Previous experience in rodent handling, histology, immunohistochemistry, cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, qPCR, and western blotting is preferred. 
  • Proficiency in Prism and MS Office. 
  • Strong writing and communication skills.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
