The role:

Are you building a career in engineering? Apply to join our Barlow project delivery crew in Region 1! You will provide quality assurance for projects, including documenting the quality of all materials. This involves partnership with ODOT and contractor staff to ensure contract requirements are met.

This is a limited duration appointment that is expected to last approximately two years. Limited duration appointments are benefits eligible and have a designated maximum length of service. The limited duration appointment has the potential to become permanent.

We may also fill this position as a rotational assignment open to current ODOT employees. Rotation candidates are required to meet the position’s minimum qualifications. Rotational assignments do not have the potential to become permanent without a separate competitive recruitment process. You must have your manager's and appointing authority’s approval before applying for this assignment.

A day in the life:

  • Interpret contract plans and specifications for transportation construction projects.

  • Verify and document quality of field-tested materials, contractor’s method of construction and placement of grade.

  • Suspend projects for non-specification work or materials.

  • Provide technical expertise to project inspectors and contractor personnel on testing procedures.

  • Maintain the test summary for materials on each projects.

  • Calculate price adjustments for materials. Ensure proper payments are made to contractors.

  • Assist in writing contract change orders.

  • Assemble project records and data for final acceptance at completion of construction.

  • May need to work long, flexible hours and be on call 24/7, including holidays.

  • Work in an office and work outdoors at construction sites. May be subject to hazards of traffic, construction and inclement weather.

  • Must lift at least 50 pounds of equipment or materials and traverse rough terrain.

Minimum qualifications:

Four years of para-professional engineering or surveying experience. One year of this experience must have been working independently or as a senior member of a team or work group.

OR

An associate's degree in engineering technology or surveying from a recognized community college or technical school of engineering and two and one-half years of engineering or surveying experience. One year of this experience must have been working independently or as a senior member of a team or work group.

OR

A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, surveying, or transportation-related engineering and one year civil engineering or surveying experience.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special qualifications:

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

The following will be required within 12 months after hire:

  • Radiation Safety Training certification

  • ODOT training certifications:

    • Certified Aggregate Technician (CAgT)

    • Certified Embankment Technician (CEBT)

    • Quality Control Technician (QCT)

    • Certified Density Technician (CDT)

    • Certified Asphalt Technician (CAT-1)

  • Experience in material testing, quality control/compliance or construction project inspection.

  • Strong knowledge of mathematics and highway construction procedures and practices.

  • Experience reading, interpreting and applying technical manuals, specifications, contract plans and other guides.

  • Preferred certifications in CATII, CCT and CMDT.

  • Experience working as part of a team in a construction office.
