The Prescribed Fire and Land Management Technician performs a variety of land management tasks, interacts with conservation partners, and manages a seasonal squad of 3-4 prescribed fire crewmembers. This position primarily will work to advance the restoration and management of natural systems and fire-dependent habitats in southwest Alabama and northwest Florida but may also work state-wide at certain times of the year.

The Prescribed Fire and Land Management Technician (RxLMT) works independently or supervises seasonal or volunteer teams to ensure the coordination, community support and implementation of land management plans on TNC and partner lands. The RxLMT implements ecological restoration activities, maintains preserve facilities, trails and roads, removes exotic invasive plants and animal species, monitors and researches species, and operates and maintains tools and equipment. This position is required to work under minimal supervision; must make independent decisions based on experience and judgments. The RxLMT must have a willingness to work long hours and travel extensively throughout Alabama. The position must function as both a leader and a member of a team, in a high stress team environment.

The RxLMT may experience performing heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, under physically demanding circumstances. It may include making decisions on the fire line based upon evaluation of fire behaviour, available resources and judgment. The RxLMT will have financial responsibilities which may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, and assisting with budget development. The position will be required to network with diverse groups including private landowners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy. The RxLMT will have potential to work with U.S. Forest Service staff on endangered species habitat restoration.

• BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in a science-related field and 1-year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or a similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with natural systems.
• Experience in ecological land management principles.
• Experience operating and or repairing various types of equipment and machinery.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 2 years related experience in land management, fire management or other science-related field.
• Coursework/training and/or experience working in natural systems of the Southeastern U.S.
• Qualified National Wildfire Coordinating Group Fire Fighter Type 1 (Squad Boss), with completed FFT1 position task book preferred, and Squad Boss experience during wildland fire operations.
• Coursework/training and/or experience in current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.
• Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timelines.
• Experience with ArcMap, including database knowledge, in order to maintain preserve records.
• Experience evaluating inputs in a rapidly changing work environment and making decisions that affect the safety and work of fire crewmembers.
• Experience with effective communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $23.00-$25.00/hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
