The role:

Do you want to learn more about highway construction and contribute to a safer and more efficient transportation system? Would you like to gain experience in quality assurance, project design processes and data collection? We are seeking an intern to work up to six months with our Statewide Project Delivery Branch’s Construction Section in the Pavement Services Unit. This full-time internship will be working outdoors and in office with a projected start date in June 2024. Apply today!

This internship is projected to start in June 2025 through September 2025. The posted salary/pay range for this announcement is based on full-time hours; the salary will be prorated for part-time hours.

What you will learn:

  • Collect and verify pavement distress, friction, and smoothness data along Oregon highway system.

  • Perform quality assurance and quality control activities of pavement data and equipment.

  • Learn the pavement design and quality assurance process.

  • Represent ODOT on highway construction sites.

  • Understand and interpret engineering plans and specifications.

  • Ensure construction activities conform to environmental standards and permits.

  • Generate project documentation required by various regulators, statutes and standards.

  • Foster positive relationships with other employees, contractors, property owners and the public.

Working conditions:

  • Work in a laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals, loud noise, solvents, dust, fumes, as well as in a laboratory office using computer equipment daily.

  • Work outdoors, in all weather conditions, 50% or more of the time – field work involves working around construction equipment and traffic hazards, and walking on various types of terrain, climbing ladders, traversing scaffolding, and working in elevated locations.

  • Lift and carry material or equipment that weighs up to 50 pounds.

  • This position will be in office and in the field, which may include night work.

Minimum qualifications:

We are accepting applications from college students who start their freshman year at the time of hire (June 2025), and college students in their freshman, sophomore, junior and/or senior year who are studying civil engineering, construction management or related fields of study.

OR

First or second year graduate students in civil engineering, construction management or related fields of study.

Special qualifications:

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Coursework or degree in civil engineering or construction management.

  • Ability to operate survey equipment or measurement devices.

  • Experience with Microsoft applications and design software.

  • Can work independently and as part of a team.

  • Time management skills with high attention to detail.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Temporary appointments may be full- or part-time and will not exceed six months or 1,040 hours.
