Center for Restorative Justice:

The Center for Restorative Justice (CRJ) at Suffolk University was founded to foster collaborative partnerships to support a growing social movement to institutionalize restorative approaches to community building, response to harm, problem-solving and violations of legal and human rights. Since 1997 Suffolk University Center for Restorative Justice has served as a regional/national/international thought-leader in restorative justice policy and practice development.

The mission of the CRJ is to serve as a bridge between the academy, professionals, and communities through institutions such as public education, training, technical assistance, research, evaluation and scholarship. As a community-engaged academic center, CRJ fosters restorative approaches to community building, resolving conflict and harm in justice systems, schools and communities.

Part Time Trainer/Restorative Justice Specialist

The Trainer/Restorative Justice Specialist supports the mission of the Center for Restorative Justice by building the capacity of others to implement restorative practices. Restorative Justice Trainers/ Specialists work with other CRJ staff to offer training and coaching to individuals, teams, and organizations, and provide more comprehensive support to school districts and individual schools. The Trainer/Restorative Justice Specialist is also responsible for planning and delivering professional development and coaching and supporting districtwide or school-based Leadership Teams.

The Part Time Trainer/Restorative Justice Specialist- K-12 and Higher Education will also work with CRJ staff on various projects to support our ongoing work with external partners and our internal growth and development as a team. This part time role is ideal for colleagues who are engaged in other professional opportunities in education and are searching for a flexible role that allows them to continue to build their skills and contribute as a restorative justice trainer when their schedule allows.

The ideal candidate has demonstrated experience in urban schools, criminal legal system, and/or social service settings; substantial experience with restorative justice practices in one or more of those settings; experience working with youth and professional development with adults; cultural acuity and cultural humility; and is able to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Trainings and Professional Development:

  • Works with other CRJ team members to develop, refine and conduct in person and/or virtual trainings, presentations, and educational events.
  • May also coach Leaderships Teams in schools and districts depending on client needs and part-time team availability.
  • Partners with full time team members to coordinate the logistics of training at each site in collaboration with that site's coordinator and Leadership Team

CRJ Team Engagement:

  • Participates when able in CRJ planning, CRJ team meetings, and meetings with CRJ partners
  • Collaborates with other CRJ staff (and consultants) on specific project design and delivery
  • Participates in relevant internal and external professional development experiences when able including collaborative reflection on training curricula, coaching models and materials, current developments in restorative justice and K-12 education, and exploring racial justice within our work and organization as a team

Administrative/Reporting Functions:

  • Provides timely reports and records
  • Facilitates team and project communication processes via meetings, reports, email, etc.
  • Represents the work of CRJ within the University, partners, media, and Community Members
  • Represents the work of CRJ positively in meetings with other agency personnel, community members, partnering organizations/agencies, and stakeholders

REQUIREMENTS

  • Min. BA/BS in related field; - advanced degree plus
  • Experience in, knowledge of, and commitment to restorative justice and restorative justice practices
  • Ability to facilitate engaging, student-centered, and community building learning experiences for diverse audiences and stakeholders
  • Experience in and knowledge of urban educational settings
  • Experience working in diverse settings
  • Demonstrated intercultural acuity and cultural humility
  • Demonstrated commitment to deepening one's awareness of how one's own multiple layers of identity and privilege impact relationships within our organization and with external partners
  • Ability to work effectively with youth and adults
  • Strong orientation to ongoing learning and continuous growth as a professional and restorative justice practitioner
  • Commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues to learn, engage in restorative justice practices, and tackle complex projects together
  • Highly organized, detail oriented with excellent writing and computer skills
  • Public speaking skills and ability to present ideas persuasively
  • Ability to transport oneself to and from full-day trainings throughout Massachusetts and New England and/or facilitate full day virtual trainings on Zoom.

The compensation for this position is $50 per hour.
