MRISJ Program AssistantDepartment Summary
The mission of the Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice at Bridgewater State University is to build knowledge about civics and social justice, to develop skills for advancing social justice through individual and collective action, and to serve as a catalyst for actualizing Bridgewater State University's commitment to advance social justice.The MRISJ provides learning opportunities, events, and resources relating to social justice and civic engagement that offer ways for students to make positive change.
Position Summary
The MRISJ is seeking a temporary, part-time Program Assistant (PA) to work 20 hours each week during the 2024-2025 academic year while classes are in session (Approx. 15 weeks each semester).The PA's main role will be to assist the MRISJ's Alternative Break Program and to support the MRISJ's advocacy, community service, social justice, and voter engagement initiatives.

TemporaryEssential Duties
- In collaboration with the MRISJ Director of Programs, assist and support the team of eight undergraduate student Alternative Break (AB) Team Leaders as they plan and facilitate four separate AB experiences.
- Assist up to 8 MRISJ Alternative Break student team leaders prepare materials for AB meetings, orientations, reflections, and trainings.
- Attend and assist with set up/break down of AB program related activities including weekly student team leader meetings, AB orientation, AB reflection session, AB info sessions, and other activities as they arise.
- Assist with AB administrative tasks.
- Examples may include assembling program materials, data entry, maintaining lists of participants, reserving space for events, requesting print shop orders, and updating AB materials.
- Assist with analysis of AB pre/post surveys.
- Attend and support MRISJ's advocacy, civic engagement and community service events.
- Examples of MRISJ events include an advocacy fair, three annual days of service (9/11 Day of Service in September, MLK Day of Service in January and Earth Day in April), two Blood Drives, local service projects, and voter registration events.
- Serve as a MRISJ representative for admissions events, campus resource fairs, classroom presentations, info tables, marketing events, and orientation programs.
- Assist with general MRISJ programmatic administrative tasks.
- Examples may include assembling program materials, data entry, maintaining lists of participants, reserving space for events, and requesting print shop orders.
- Assist with analysis of MRISJ program pre/post surveys, program evaluations, and feedback forms.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Available to work, in-person for 20 hours a week.
- Schedule may include evening hours on Tuesdays for AB team leader meetings.
- Schedule may include occasional weekend hours to support service projects.
- Experience in event planning or student programming (undergraduate experience qualifies).
- Strong organization abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to relate well to others.
- Good skills with Outlook email, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and willingness to learn and use Qualtrics.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Public speaking experience.
- Ability to follow instructions, take directions, and work independently.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Demonstrated leadership and initiative.
- Enjoy working with college students and have a desire to interact with college students.
- Have an open mind and be flexible.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience or strong interest in advocacy, civic engagement, community service and/or social justice work.
- An interest in engaging students in conversation through the lens of civic engagement and social justice.
- An understanding and appreciation for co-curricular education.
- Experience working with college students, faculty, and staff (undergraduate experience qualifies).
- Demonstrated passion for social justice and civic engagement along with a steadfast commitment to creating an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
