ABOUT THE CAMBRIDGE POLICE DEPARTMENT:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of automotive equipment. Work involves repair and maintenance work on automobiles, motorcycles, light duty trucks and some specialized automotive equipment. Daily check of fluids on all vehicles (marked and unmarked). General automotive maintenance work. Shuttling of vehicles to and from Police garage and various automotive shops. Perform brake jobs, oil changes, tune-ups, change tires, change filters, battery cleaning and replacement, etc. Change and/or replace lamps, bulbs, and wipers. Washing and cleaning of vehicles (marked and unmarked) inside and out. Maintain records of automotive repairs and service operations. Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Two (2) years of full-time experience in a variety of automotive repairs.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • General knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of a wide variety of automobiles, motorcycles, light duty trucks, and specialized automotive equipment.
  • General knowledge and skill in the use of all types of shop tools.
  • Ability to diagnose the more common defects in the motors and bodies of automotive equipment.
  • Ability to detect by inspection any worn or broken automotive part, or wrongly adjusted part in assembly.
  • Ability to keep records of repair and service operations, and to make reports.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Ability to learn and become efficient in software applications that follow diagnostic procedures.

PREFERRED:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Manufacturer's Dealership Training certificate in an Automotive Mechanic Specialty area(s) preferably from Ford Motors.
  • Ability to operate a computer system equivalent to a Windows based PC preferred.
  • Familiarity with various operating systems including Microsoft Office, including working with spreadsheets and searching various databases preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Exposure to all weather conditions. Work in a moderate to high noise level environment caused by sound of machinery or powered equipment being used. Occasional odor may occur during work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Lifting between 25-100 pounds, proper bending, squatting, stretching, pushing, climbing, dragging, and pulling. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
