This position is responsible for providing excellent patient care and experience in accordance with MPHC guiding principles, HIPAA, and any other applicable federal & state laws. The Medical Assistant I position requires a basic level of knowledge regarding the functions necessary to be a Medical Assistant.
Essential Functions
- Ensures HIPAA compliance and patient privacy in accordance with the law, and with MPHC policies and procedures.
- Handles sterile and dirty instruments used in the departments according to CLIA law and regulations.
- Cleans patient care areas in accordance with infection control procedures.
- Keeps exam rooms/procedure rooms stocked/set up according to departmental guidelines.
- Routinely cleans medical equipment to meet quality assurance. Identifies equipment needing maintenance. Reports malfunctioning equipment to Lead, and removes malfunctioning equipment out of patient care areas, if possible, for repair.
- Obtains and documents chief complaint, vital signs, and medical/social histories per procedure.
- Facilitates the completion of questionnaires, as needed.
- Uses proper charting procedure, i.e., noting date, time signature and job title.
- Plots growth grids in pediatrics.
- Manages telephone messages from department and ensures patient rescheduling with appropriate timeframes.
- Verifies, administers, and documents all medications and/or immunizations given. Including lot #, location, and initials, per procedure.
- Manages EHR tasks for department daily, following established EHR workflow, including Labs/Di’s, TE’s, Documents, Actions and Consult Pending, etc.
- Completes chart prep for department daily to include the review of any outstanding care items and reviews ASIIS, as appropriate; makes updates to EMR as needed.
- Utilizes and/or schedules interpreter services as needed by the patient.
- Checks immunizations and supplies for expired items
- Restocks sterilization area and other shared areas with supplies including but not limited to urine cups, needles, gauze, band aids.
- Ensures biohazard and sharps containers are properly disposed of or emptied.
- Check fax outbox to ensure there are no failed faxes for department.
- Completes daily accountability board and attend scheduled department meetings.
- Must be able to adapt to working with different provider teams when needed for coverage.
- Participates in preparing department for internal and external site audits.
- Maintains training, skills, and certifications in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Consistent, reliable in-person attendance is required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Medical Assistant Certificate
- Current CPR Certification
Preferred Qualifications:
- Electronic Health Record experience
- At least one year of previous medical back-office experience
- RMA or CMA credential
