Job Summary

The Michigan Aerospace Engineering Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan is seeking a LEO Lecturer III focused on teaching core aerospace undergraduate theoretical and laboratory courses and selected graduate courses. Candidates should have a strong interest and demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate students and/or early-stage engineering professionals. Courses areoffered during Fall and Winter terms. Candidates are also expected to participate in various departmental services, including but not limited to, advising student groups and serving on various departmental committees. The expected percentage effort for this position will be 100% effort.

Course Description

The Michigan Aerospace Engineering Department has developed a curriculum devoted to covering the various topics in aerospace engineering: aerodynamics, propulsion, structures and materials, dynamics and control, systems engineering, etc. While all areas will be considered, current needs focus on  structures and materials courses, and laboratory courses.

Required Qualifications*

  • PhD degree in Aerospace Engineering
  • At least 7 years of demonstrated experience in teaching undergraduate engineering courses in aerospace or mechanical engineering programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of materials and structures
  • Laboratory teaching experience
  • Exceptional communication (oral, written) skills
  • Experience with, and a passion for, mentoring and developing future engineers and leaders

Desired Qualifications*

  • Demonstrated record of scholarly work in the field of structural mechanics and/or materials
  • Knowledge of scientific computing
  • Ability and willingness to teach in all areas in the aerospace engineering curriculum
  • Experience with engineering graphics, SolidWorks or equivalent

Additional Information

The position is subject to final administrative approval.

Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Selection Process

Review of candidates will begin immediately. Only complete application packets will be reviewed. The expected date by which the offer of appointment will be made is December 2024 with a projected start date January 2025.
