What's the role

As an Instrument Inspector, you will be a member of the Process Automation Control & Optimization (PACO) Team within the Asset's Technology Department. Also, you will work closely with and share responsibility with the Instrument Specialists and Instrument Team lead for the overall technical assurance of the plant Instrumentation. In the assets run and maintain phase, your focus will be day-to-day 2nd level maintenance technical support for complex situational and reliability problems related to field instrumentation.

You will work closely with the Instrument Maintenance Team to support effective and cost-efficient Instrument maintenance.

Accountabilities:

  • You will act as a direct liaison between the technology and maintenance organizations. You are also expected to take a lead role in troubleshooting, determining root cause of complex field instrumentation failures, data acquisition problems and developing technically sound solutions

  • Support and assist in maintaining the PM library and will contribute to develop detailed PM texts (maintenance procedures) for field instrumentation and 3rd package systems

  • Will bring forward and implement programs/procedures to maintain field instrumentation reliability

  • Condition monitoring and predictive analysis/maintenance recommendations with Instrument Asset Management System (iAMS) or other data acquisition systems

  • You will be responsible for the execution of the Management of Change work process for reliability related improvements/changes with approval of the Instrument Team Lead

  • Participates in incident investigations related to field instrumentation

  • Contributes directly to finding root cause and resolution of bad actors

  • Acts as mentor and 2nd level support to Instrument maintenance technicians

  • Active in developing training material for I&E technicians

  • Continue to meet existing industry standards as well as changing requirements from Regulatory and recognized governing Industry Standards (e.g. IEC-61511)

  • Recommends equipment upgrades and replacements when situations warrant it, such as high cost of maintainability, Obsolescence, loss of vendor support and more effective technological breakthroughs,

  • You will participate in Factory Acceptance Tests & Site Acceptance Tests (as required)

  • Responsible for supporting the update of the central repository for instrument database (SPI) with data sheets, wiring drawings, etc. with changes during CSU/early Run & maintain

  • Provides support in the maintenance of the instrument Function Location (FLOC) structure in GSAP with right hierarchy and cost centers

  • Works with SIS Focal and other MEC focals to capture the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for instrumentation based on maintenance and overall performance

  • Shares in the collective responsibility of ensuring instrument reliability and correct instrument configurations in the site's iAMS system

  • May be called in outside normal working hours to assist Instrument maintenance technicians as emergency situations occur

What we need from you

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer

  • Associates or equivalent degree in chemical, electrical, mechanical or Instrumentation with demonstrated leadership, knowledge and practical field instrumentation experience

  • With at least 10 years of experience with different type of field instrumentation, basic process control system (BPCS), Safety Instrumented System (SIS), environmental condition monitoring systems and Instrument Asset Management System (iAMS)

  • Experience with maintaining and calibrating the Safety Instrumented Functions (SIFs)/SIL instrument loops, final control elements (on/off valves, control valves, louvers, motor starters, etc.), fire & gas detectors, custody transfer measurement, weight scales/load cells is a plus

  • Experience in a manufacturing or technical support environment

  • Experience in olefins plants and/or in the polymer plants (PE, PPE, etc.) is a plus

  • Knowledge of different industry protocols for field instruments such as HART, Modbus, Profibus, etc

  • Responsible for reliability and overall manage equipment care (MEC) in a process unit for a multitude of field instrumentation and different measurement technologies; not limited to Pressure, flow, level, temperature, density, speed, vibration, weight measurement, signal conditioning systems, data acquisition systems, control valves, automated on/off valves, motor control starters, fire & gas detectors.

  • Extensive focus will be on condition monitoring / predictive maintenance for instrumentation and control systems.

The base salary range for this position is $101,000.00 - $151,000.00 per year.  Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.  

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave to birthing mothers, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.

Additionally, employees are eligible for disability leave for up to 52 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
