Job Summary

The Instructor, Electrical Systems will: train, instruct, and monitor the classifications in the Electrical Maintenance Division - Wirepersons and Wireperson Forepersons - on their duties and responsibilities; and certify and recertify various classifications on an annual and/or bi-annual basis, including applicable NFPA-70 code requirements, in all aspects of their classification and adherence to all Authority and Departmental procedures and rules.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage all Electrical Maintenance training programs to meet a variety of Power Department needs.
  • Conduct classroom and field training on the various aspects of each classification.
  • Direct curriculum and develop documentation as necessary to expand training programs for new equipment and coordinate all training facility activities.
  • Develop and conduct training on the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical assets.
  • Conduct observations of operating employees in the performance of their duties.
  • Assist in the development of training programs, PowerPoint presentations, films, handouts and written exams for the professional development and promotion of employees.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and conduct with Supervisors/Instructors classroom and on-the-job training to minimize any impact on regular personnel assignment.
  • Re-instruct employees on their duties when needed or directed by the Supervisor of Training and/or the Superintendent of Power Systems & Equipment.
  • Keep accurate training records on all students; and maintain up-to-date training programs by establishing ongoing communications with educational services and vendors.
  • Establish and maintain an audiovisual library of instructional material, direct the development of technical manuals for instructional and reference purposes, and evaluate existing training programs and provide suggestions for modifications and improvements.
  • Conduct checks on safety equipment on MBTA vehicles.
  • Assist operations during special events and holidays such as the 4th of July and New Year's Eve.
  • Drive a company or personal vehicle to visit work sites and to assist at emergencies and/or events as needed.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) from an accredited institution.
  • Five (5) years working as a journeyman electrician in a commercial/industrial environment with experience
    in the maintenance and installation of AC distribution equipment, control systems, and related equipment
    operations.
  • A valid Massachusetts State Journeyman Electrician's License.
  • A valid Massachusetts Class D driver's license.
  • Effective organizational and analytical skills.
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Database or PowerPoint applications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • The ability to evaluate and guide the performance of others in various training situations.
  • Excellent customer service, training, and presentation skills.
  • The ability to supervise represented Wirepersons and work effectively with a diverse workforce.
Preferred Experience and Skills
  • A valid Massachusetts State Master Electrician's License.
  • Experience teaching NFPA 70 (NEC) with applicable Massachusetts amendments.

  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and medical Clinic screening, potentially including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service
