The role:

Do you want to use your skills to make a difference? Join our hardworking maintenance crew and help keep Oregon’s roads and travelers safe! As part of our team, you will make decisions and operate equipment necessary to maintain and repair roadways, highways, bridges and structures. You will also help with emergency cleanup and traffic control after crashes, storms, spills and more! Apply today!

This is a limited duration appointment that is expected to end on or before 7/1/2025. Limited duration appointments are benefits eligible and have a designated maximum length of service. This position has the potential to become permanent.

Note: This position will be based in Steamboat during the winter season then will be based in Roseburg during the summer. The successful candidate will use a personal vehicle to travel to both maintenance stations.

A day in the life:

  • Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment and tools to maintain and repair various surfaces.

  • Apply, maintain and replace roadway or highway striping and legends.

  • Perform paving work and other minor surface repairs.

  • Assist with weather related emergencies and operate snowplows, deicer trucks and other equipment to clear snow from roadways.

  • Clear vegetation using hand tools, motorized brush cutters, brush chippers and mowers.

  • Set out traffic control including lane closures, flagging and mobile operations.

  • Clean up roadways after crashes and spills which may include hazardous materials.

  • Service and repair tools and motorized equipment.

  • Exposure to noise, extreme heights, heavy traffic, all weather conditions, high temperatures, heavy equipment and hazardous chemicals is expected.

  • Must be able to move around rough terrain, bend and stoop for extended periods and may need to lift up to 60 pounds.

  • May need to be available after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency, on call and weather related purposes.

Minimum qualifications:

One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work.

OR

Two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training.

Special qualifications:

Commercial Learner Permit Required: Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business. You must possess a current, valid commercial driver learner permit prior to the application deadline. Employee with be required to receive a commercial driver license A (CDL-A) with no air brake restrictions, no 5th wheel restrictions, and no manual transmission restrictions, within 60 days of hire. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse registration and full query check for our final candidate(s) and annual query for current employees.

This position requires a maximum 60 minute response time to 2026 Steelhead Caddis Rd, Idleyld Park, Oregon from Nov. 1st - April 30th and a maximum 30 minute response time to 3339 Old Highway 99S, Roseburg, Oregon from May 1st - Oct. 31st for emergency call-outs.

  • Winter operations experience which includes plowing snow and operating equipment.
