GIS Analyst - Job Description
Visionary Communications, LLC seeks a qualified individual to fulfill the role of GIS Analyst. This full-time, salary position will join Visionary's internal GIS team and report to the GIS Manager. The position can be remote based in Colorado, Montana or Wyoming, preference will be given to candidates based out of Visionary's Durango, Canon City, Poncha Springs, or Gunnison offices in Colorado, or in Visionary's Gillette, Sheridan, Cheyenne, or Casper offices in Wyoming.
Job Overview:
- The GIS Analyst you will work closely with multiple teams within Visionary to obtain, analyze, and utilize GIS data for a wide variety of fiber and wireless broadband projects. The primary responsibility of the position will be the integration and vetting of GIS data from multiple platforms, but the Analyst will also build and maintain FME workspaces that make data analysis tasks repeatable. Visionary is primarily a QGIS and FME based environment.
- A candidate will benefit from an understanding of, and experience with, telecom OSP principles and procedures, primarily in a fiber and fixed wireless-based environment. A strong candidate will be familiar with API calls
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Work with a team of experienced engineers to design fiber builds both small and large through compilation and analysis of State, County, Federal, local-level, and internal datasets.
* Work with Visionary's Fiber Team to maintain accurate plant maps and data, including maps of partner assets such as duct, conduit, strand, primary and secondary lines, and poles.
* Work with Visionary's Sales and Marketing Team to identify prospective customers for fiber and wireless services and to ingest data collected via mobile apps into the GIS.
* Assist Visionary's Wireless Team in creating and maintaining wireless coverage models, and to help analyze new potential tower opportunities.
* Coordinate with Visionary's Regulatory Team on various state and federal regulatory reporting requirements.
* Work with Visionary's Grant Team to analyze potential grant opportunities and to support ongoing grant application and reporting efforts.
* Promote GIS adoption throughout the company and facilitate access to data through the GIS platform.
* Train and support company personnel on GIS software and tools.
Qualifications:
A qualified candidate must possess the following skills, or have equivalent experience and/or qualifications:
- BS or Associates in GIS, Cartography, Geography, Remote Sensing, or related field. Three years of experience in lieu of degree will be considered.
- 2+ years of experience working with Safe Software's FME (Feature Manipulation Engine).
- 1-2 years of experience with geospatially aware databases such as PostgreSQL.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Excellent organizational skills and must be detail oriented.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with demonstrated problem-solving abilities including the ability to envision system needs from business user interactions.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, as well as ability to quickly learn and work within proprietary computer applications.
Desired Skills:
- Experience with FME Server.
- Experience building and maintaining web maps on open-source platforms.
- Experience working with LiDAR, point cloud data and Digital Surface Models.
- Working knowledge of open-source platforms and tools such as QGIS, MapServer, TileStash, and OpenLayers.
- Preference for candidates with familiarity of VETRO FiberMap, FOND, Cloud-RF, HubSpot, CrowdFiber, Sonar, Monday, MerginMaps and/or Katapult systems.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires sitting to complete work with a computer using a variety of software & GIS applications and telephone.
<10% of the time will be spent walking and standing in the field with various weather conditions, as well as occasional lifting and/or carrying and/or pushing/pulling of items less than 25lbs.
Visual and audio acuity is essential to this position.
