The Department of Performing Arts at Emerson College invites applications for a Full-time limited term faculty position (Artist-in-Residence). This faculty member will also serve in the role of Interim Artistic Director of Emerson Stage, the producing organization within the Department of Performing Arts comprised of the students, faculty, staff, and guest artists of the department, for the 2025-2026 academic year. This one-year faculty appointment (renewable for a second by the college if needed) begins August 21, 2025, with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 21-22, 2025.This position will teach 3 courses (12 credits) per academic year in their area of specialty at the undergraduate or graduate levels, or 2 courses plus the direction of one production during the Emerson Stage season.
Emerson Stage is the production company within the Department of Performing Arts and produces approximately eight fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through curricular projects, student theatre organizations, and ArtsEmerson, the College’s professional presenting company. In its structure and processes, Emerson Stage models professional theatre-making practices and seeks to expand, respond to, and create the next generation of theatre-makers. Season selections are based primarily on the training needs of our students, specifically our undergraduate students.

The duties of Artistic Director include:
Overseeing the artistic mission and administration of Emerson Stage, the production company within the Department of Performing Arts, in accordance with the college’s and department’s educational mission, consulting with faculty, staff, and students and making recommendations/reporting to the Chair of the Department of Performing Arts.
Identifying and interviewing potential guest directors for Emerson Stage seasons; serving as the point of contact for all Emerson Stage directors during pre-production, auditions, rehearsals and performances. Providing orientation for guest directors, familiarizing them with all Emerson Stage policies and practices.
Attending weekly production meetings for all Emerson Stage productions; attending rehearsals as needed, greeting and welcoming the company at first rehearsal, attending dress rehearsals and providing any feedback requested from directors.
Representing Emerson Stage as the public voice of the organization and seeking to maintain a high profile for EmStage and promote a culture of collaboration and inclusion.
The required qualifications include:
Minimum of five years of professional theatre experience.
Must demonstrate knowledge of areas of theatre training offered in the Performing Arts Department at Emerson College.
Hold a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) or equivalent professional experience in an area of theatre related to this position, including (but not limited to) directing and arts management.
Experience teaching at the college-level or in a conservatory setting.
