Job Summary

Under regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, cleans, organizes, and maintains the appearance of the Greenlink Transfer Center’s interior and exterior, to include the grounds. Cleans restrooms, bus shelters, stops, and service equipment. Performs basic maintenance of bus stops and shelters. Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies as well as maintains reports of cleaning and maintenance service provided. Actively participate in the reporting of safety issues and concerns that are observed during the course of essential job functions.

  • Clean and Maintain Bus Stops and Shelters: Drive pickup truck, following pre-established route to each Greenlink bus stop and shelter in order to inspect all stops and shelters for cleanliness and damage. Empty trash containers, and sweep up trash at each location. Keep bus stop signs and trolley signs for directional information updated. Pressure wash bus stops and shelter areas as needed; pressure wash transfer center weekly. Use backpack blower to remove leaf litter and debris from bus stops and transfer center. Trim trees, limbs, and grass, etc. from around bus stops and bus shelters. Maintain contact with supervisor, report broken glass, stop/shelter damage, and/or other relevant concerns. Dispense weed killer and insect killer as needed. Coordinate maintenance needs and schedules with planning as needed.

  • Clean Bus Terminal and Bus Maintenance Facility: Clean restrooms, bus platform, offices, equipment, signs, and windows at both the Greenlink Bus Terminal and Operations & Maintenance Facility. Clean inside buildings to include dusting, sweeping, mopping, waxing/stripping linoleum floors, shampooing rugs, etc. Remove and empty all trash and recycling inside and around facilities. Clean, service, and disinfect restrooms replacing all paper products and supplies. Clean up spills, as well as provide stain and spot removal.

  • Receive Cleaning Supplies and Document Maintenance Work: Pick up and maintain inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies. Maintain reports of cleaning and maintenance work performed at each bus stop and shelter, as well as at the terminal. Observe the condition of the vehicle used for servicing bus stops and shelters for proper and safe driving operation, such as lights, mirrors, doors, brakes, tire wear, heater, and/or air conditioning. Report any suspected mechanical problems immediately to supervisor. Proactively identifies, removes, and reports potential safety hazards. Serve as a subject matter expert on Greenlink’s Safety Committee as required.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent training and/or job related experience.
  • This is an entry level position for which training will be provided.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior custodial and/or grounds maintenance experience.


Driver's License Requirements

  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.


Performance Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • Standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment of the janitorial service.
  • Occupational hazards and standard general industry safety practices.
  • Proper use of cleaning chemicals and disinfectants, fertilizers, and pesticides.
  • Proper body mechanics, including proper bending and lifting techniques in maintenance environments.
  • Traffic rules, regulations and laws and procedures for the safe operation of motor vehicles.
  • Geography and roadways of an assigned route and of the entire service area.
  • Safety practices for the use of ladders, scaffolding, or elevated walkways.
  • Basic janitorial tasks, including cleaning, stocking, and trash disposal.
  • Proper procedures for safely cleaning bodily fluid spills per the Bloodborne Pathogen Policy.
  • Proper use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • General facility maintenance.

Ability to:

  • Perform basic janitorial tasks, including cleaning, stocking, and trash disposal.
  • Observe condition of various amenities related to public transit bus stops and facilities and correct identified deficiencies in cleanliness.
  • Perform heavy manual labor, including heavy lifting.
  • Safely drive a loaded or unloaded pick-up truck, with or without a trailer, in urban and rural environments and under various environmental conditions (such as rain, nightfall, and fog).
  • Use mirrors to view objects behind and to the sides of the vehicle.
  • Inspect, maintain, and safely use ladders, scaffolding, or elevated walkways.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet deadlines, and follow up on assignments.
  • Demonstrate strong customer service skills and establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships.
  • Maintain records and files on work performed.
  • Identify and report safety issues and concerns that are observed during the course of essential job functions.
  • Read basic communication using common two or three syllable words.
  • Write simple sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.
  • Perform the basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and effectively use ratios and measurements.
  • Drive a City pickup truck. 
  • Operate light equipment (e.g., pressure washer, leaf blower, and weed trimmer), hand tools, and professional cleaning equipment (e.g., scrub machine, and buffing machine), vacuum cleaner, broom, dust mop, bucket cleaning products, cloths/towels, etc.
  • Operate general office equipment to include telephone and computer for the purpose of submitting electronic timesheets.


Working Conditions

Primary Work Location:  Bus terminal, operations & maintenance facility shop, bus shelters, vehicle, and outdoors (roadways).

Protective Equipment Required:  Safety glasses, Kevlar and nitrile gloves, dust masks, close-toed shoes, and reflective vest.

Environmental/Health and Safety Factors:  

Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk. Daily exposure to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards. Frequent exposure to fire, mechanical and road hazards. Occasional exposure to chemical hazards, electrical hazards, and physical danger or abuse.

Physical Demands:  

Continuously requires standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, vision, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires crawling, pushing/pulling, handling/grasping, climbing, foot controls, bending, fine dexterity, and crouching and stooping. Occasionally requires sitting, kneeling, and balancing. Heavy strength demands include exerting up to 20 pounds constantly, 20-50 pounds frequently, and 50-100 pounds occasionally.

Mental Demands:  

Frequently requires time pressures, frequent change of tasks, irregular schedule/overtime, performing multiple tasks simultaneously, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment.
