Job Summary

The Equipment Operator will operate specialized equipment while supporting the Maintenance of Way Division crews and Authority departments during activities related to track maintenance, construction, snowstorms, and other miscellaneous tasks.

Duties & Responsibilities

* Operate specialized on-track equipment while supporting crews during track maintenance activities, including but not limited to, delivering, spreading, and sweeping excess ballast, restoring track shoulder integrity, delivering track materials to job sites, removing used and/or scrap materials, and installing rails and cross ties.
* Complete track special works, surfacing and alignment.
* Operate specialized road equipment during excavation activities.
* Deliver materials and stock to job sites and/or yards.
* Load work trains and remove used and scrap materials system-wide.
* Deliver to and remove hand and power tools from job sites and/or yards, repair, and storage facilities.
* Empty trash dumpsters on a daily basis at the Charlestown facility.
* Mix, load and deliver ice and snow-melting materials.
* Transport heavy equipment to and from job sites, yards, and maintenance facilities.
* Maintain an inventory and distribution log of hand and power tools on work trains and equipment while maintaining acceptable levels of tools necessary for completion of projects.
* Ensure that materials and stock loaded onto work trains and equipment are safely secured for transportation.
* Operate equipment required to fabricate rails ensuring compliance to plans or sketches specifications.
* Operate road and on-track snow fighting equipment during snowstorms ensuring that Authority's bus ways, parking lots, train station platforms and facilities are plowed and treated with melting material, as required, to ensure safe revenue and non-revenue operation.
* Ensure track and its components are in an acceptable operating condition to ensure safe revenue and non-revenue operation.
* Run/test specialized equipment through their operating modes to determine operating performance conditions.
* Conduct, prepare and submit to area supervisor daily activity and vehicle and equipment circle inspection reports.
* Perform all duties under lower classifications, as required.
* Respond to each inquiry, whether from a customer, vendor, or co-worker in a courteous and
professional manner.
* Drive a company or personal vehicle to work sites and assist at emergencies and events, and/or events as needed.
* Respond, either directly or through others, to emergencies twenty-four (24) hours, seven (7) days per week.
* Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

* High School diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution with the ability to comprehend, communicate and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
* Current classification as a Trackperson or System Repairer.
* Possess effective organizational and analytical skills.
* The ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous and professional experience.
* The ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce.
* Be available to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.

Licenses and Certifications
* Possession of a valid driver's license.
* Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with general knowledge and air brakes endorsements prior to filling this position.
* The successful candidate is responsible for obtaining any additional licenses required for special equipment operation after completing the Authority's training and within six months of being rated into the position. (ex. Hoisting License.)
* Once an internal candidate meets the minimum qualifications established by the Authority, the order of transfer of the qualified internal candidate(s) will be determined by seniority.

  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and medical Clinic screening, potentially including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service
