The Welding Engineer/Specialist is the enterprise subject matter expert (“SME”) on welding and fusion, which includes ownership of the welding and fusion manuals and procedures; as such, this position is responsible for hands-on coordination and control of the joining program across all of GAS. This position is a critical contact between Atlanta Gas Light, Chattanooga Gas, Nicor Gas, Virginia Natural Gas and MS&T.

Responsibilities include assisting in the timely inventory, evaluation, and recommendation of proper GAS joining systems; writing processes and procedures intrinsic to the GAS joining program; and maintaining archival, joining program, and compliance-related systems.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serves as subject matter expert for the Company in joining (fusion/welding) procedures.
- Provides consultation for the various operating areas as it pertains to Company procedures and specifications, standard practices, and technical guidance in fusion and welding.
- Provides guidance to those who are primarily involved with fusion/welding qualification/requalification, non-destructive testing and analysis, assessments, training, and certification.
- Responds to internal requests enterprise-wide for system design and technical support as they relate to joining (fusion/welding) materials and system components.
- Authority to stop work at any jobsite for failure to comply with applicable Code, Standards, and company procedures.
- Reviews and approves new welding procedures per API 1104 or section IX of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
- Collaborates with Materials Testing (lab) Analyst and Materials Engineer(s) in the preparation of in-house laboratory and field tests, data analysis, and reporting required for evaluation of new products, materials, and technologies (projects). Interacts with third-party labs for specialized testing.
- Audits Company Operating Procedure Manual (“OPM”) against current edition (IBR) of API 1104 yearly. Proposes, drafts, approves, and implements new OPM language as needed.
- Performs and/or oversees on-site manufacturer pressure regulator station (“first stage regulator”/“tin whistle”) and large rotary meter set inspections to ensure vendor compliance with specified requirements of material being purchased.
- Consultant on whether to qualify/disqualify Company and contractor personnel in fusion/welding per Operator Qualification procedures.
- Establishes criteria on joining equipment and tools to optimize their performance, monitors joining material and tool performance to service level- and listed standards and compares actual performance to published expectations and enterprise needs.
- Writes formal, analytical communications including approval reports, corrective action reports, joining (fusion/welding) procedures, and operating manuals.
- Oversees manufacturer vessel fabrication inspections for x-ray evaluation of welds, workmanship, and general fabrication practices. Consultant on whether to accept/reject prefabricated vessels based on observations made during plant inspections.
- Performs and/or oversees on-site x-ray inspection of welds, ultrasonic testing, dye-penetrant testing, and other non-destructive testing of welds.
- Oversees compliance of record-keeping for qualified joiners.
- Monitors Joiner Database to ensure a qualified fusion/welding workforce is utilized.
- Supports Regulatory Compliance during Public Service Commission (“PSC”) audits.
- Supports Supply Chain and Inventory Control by assisting incoming material inspection program at the CDC, and with integrated suppliers.

Education, Certifications/Licenses
Required:
- High school graduate or college/university graduate
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng)
- Valid drivers license
Preferred:
- BA/BS in recognized engineering discipline
- EIT or Profession Engineering License
- State Radiographer Qualification
Related Work Experience
Required:
- 5+ years experience in welding / joining activities
- Extensive welding background and extensive operating department experience
Preferred:
- Experience writing technical standards, procedures, and/or manuals
Applicant may possess a combination of equivalent education and work experience.

- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of 49CFR192 Sub-parts E and F, and Appendix C
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of API 1104 and Section IX of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
