Job Summary

The basic purpose of the Inspector- Elevators and Escalators is to ensure safe operation of elevators and related machinery. The general duties and responsibilities of this position are to inspect and test elevators, dumb waiters, moving walkways, sidewalk elevators, hoists, lifts, escalators, and related machinery for compliance with laws; approve plans for the installation of and conduct practical tests on these devices; issue certificates of inspection; and perform related work as required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Inspect and test all MBTA elevators, dumb waiters, moving walkways, sidewalk elevators, lifts, escalators, hoist and related machinery by observing mechanical and electrical systems and safety control devices from inside, on top of or underneath such equipment.
  • Issues or revokes certificates of inspection and advise MBTA contractor of violation to ensure that elevators meet legal operating requirements to Mass. CMR 524.
  • Review and comment on plans and specifications for proposed installations or alterations of elevators and related machinery with regard to Mass. CMR 524 code.
  • Report and follow up on accidents and complaints of defective or unsafe equipment, etc.
  • Order shutdowns of and/or corrective action to be taken on faculty or unsafe elevators to ensure that such systems meet operating requirements as set forth by the MBTA and Mass. 524.
  • Prepare documentation in the form of narrative or technical reports on elevator accidents or on results of investigations for use in court action.
  •  Review complaints or allegations made in connection with elevator systems being operated in violation of safety codes or other MBTA safety violations.
  • Perform periodic inspections during construction or alteration to assure conformance with approved plans and performs periodic inspections of temporary workmen's elevators to ensure safety. 
  • Conduct on-site elevator technician licenses as required by the MBTA. 
  • Perform related work such as coordinating and scheduling work with other agencies, contacting parties to verify or clarify information, compiling statistical data, maintaining personal logs, and representing the MBTA at elevator related hearings or meetings.
  • Use technology and handheld devices, various software and email systems, and inputs data into computer software systems.
  • Attend training on new/changing devices as well as new/changing software to be used or implemented by the MBTA.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, vendors, and employees.
  • Ability to travel to all MBTA related sites and other domestic and foreign locations for work purposes.
  • Available to work all shifts and locations as assigned or directed.
  • Available to work as per assignment by the MBTA twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as directed by supervisory personnel for severe weather conditions, emergencies or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.
  • Adhere to rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the MBTA including the EEO, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, and anti-retaliation policies.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) from an accredited institution with the ability to comprehend, communicate and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
  • Must have a current and valid License as an Elevator Constructor, Maintenance Man, and Repairman issued by the Division of Professional Licensure - Office of Public Safety and Inspections
  • Valid Massachusetts Elevator Mechanic License.
  • Four (4) years of experience managing maintenance, construction contracts or related work with elevators, dumb waiters, moving walkways, sidewalk elevators, lifts, escalators, hoists or related machinery.
  • Experience with design and plan review. 
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts Elevator Regulations and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Effective organizational, analytical, confidentiality, multi-tasking, time management and documentation skill.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office or Database applications.
  • A valid driver's license.
  • Effectively communicate with regulatory agencies, community organizations and others on technical and sensitive matters.
  • Have excellent customer service, negotiation, conflict resolution, writing and communication skills.
  • Have a valid driver's license.
  • Have the ability to work any and all shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed.
  • Available to work twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week. 
  • Have the ability to work with a diverse workforce.
  • Attend, participate, and contribute to local safety committee meetings, as needed.
  • Ability to adhere to rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and policies of the MBTA including the EEO, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, and anti-retaliation policies.

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Experience with vertical transportation related Massachusetts General Laws and APTA and FTA guidelines.
  • A bachelor's degree in construction management or related field

  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and medical Clinic screening, potentially including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service
