Job Description

The Director, US Tax will be primarily responsible for overseeing, managing, and reporting on the US tax operations of the single-family rental platform, the single-family development platform, and the ancillary US private funds legacy platform. The role will require strong business acumen and analyses of the tax impact of special transactions supporting corporate goals. Strong coaching, mentoring and knowledge sharing with staff is required to support the team's personal growth. Knowledge of tax technology, software, and ability to create customized business information reports will clearly be an asset

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following but are not limited to the job specifications contained herein. Additional duties or job functions that can be performed safely may be required as deemed necessary by supervisory personnel.

  • Drive the tax compliance requirements of the company (Corporate, JVs and Funds) and optimize the legal entity structure for tax efficiencies and risk management.

  • Retain awareness of the company's tax position to ensure projections of current and future cash tax obligations.

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to help optimize business performance and execute on new growth initiatives.

  • Advise on automation and IT initiatives within the broader finance and accounting function including ownership of the tax depreciation books and reports.

  • Maintain reports and dashboards to track key tax performance metrics.

  • Partner with the asset management team on acquisitions, dispositions, 1031 exchanges and launch of ancillary revenue programs.

  • Assist with third party financing and securitization programs to ensure all tax elections and entity classifications forms are filed.

  • Simplify and rationalize the legal entity structure.

  • Maintain and update tax automation tools such as the Tax Provision App, Franchise Tax Model and Forecasting Model.

  • Lead tax examinations and correspondence with the IRS and State.

  • Review all internal financings and related party lending relationships to ensure tax efficiencies are maintained.

  • Mentor and manage junior tax colleagues.

  • Educate the C-suite on tax law changes that could impact our key business metrics.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced understanding of Excel and expert financial modeling skills with an in-depth understanding of complex finance and accounting concepts.

  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills with a direct, professional, and mature communication style; proven ability to interact comfortably and effectively with C-suite, senior management, and external advisors; ability to organize and lead meetings.

  • Strong investment and financial acumen with keen understanding of the impact that business decisions will have on the profitability, risk, and return for a given investment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with cross-departmental teams to further strategic objectives.

  • Strong organizational skills, with ability to set priorities across multiple work streams and team members, and work to tight deadlines while ensuring accuracy of deliverables.

  • Strong analytical thinker with an eye for relevant detail, priority management and planning capabilities.

  • Motivation, aptitude, and presence to interact with and participate in projects with senior management.

  • Ability to always maintain trust and confidentiality.

  • Ability to contribute to and shape a positive corporate and team culture.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree from a top-tier university with excellent academic performance; business or related degree preferred, but not required with appropriate work experience.

  • Minimum of 10 years finance and or tax experience.

  • 5+ years of experience managing people and/or projects.

  • CPA designation is a requirement.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Experience in Big 4, private equity or a private equity-backed company a plus.

Salary Range

Placement within this compensation range will be determined by the candidate's knowledge, experience and skills.
