Clinical Service Nurse II- Duke University Hospital - Day Shift

Duke University Health System- Duke University Hospital seeks to hire an experienced Registered Nurse who will embrace our mission of Advancing Health Together.

Department Profile:
The Children's Health Center and Lenox Baker Children's Hospital at Duke University Hospital is comprised of pediatric outpatient clinics. Our team is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience, every time. The Complex Care Clinic at Duke Children's is active in delivering exemplary care for each patient to ensure an excellent patient experience.

This position will provide triage support and care coordination for this high acuity patient population in collaboration with dynamic multidisciplinary teams.  This position will work closely with the faculty directors of Pediatric Complex Care Team.  We are looking for someone with the ability to establish a strong rapport with patients and families by phone, coordinate services, and provide education and nursing support to patients and families in and out of the clinic setting. 

Work Hours & Shifts:
Full Time: Hours may very, but will typically fall within a standard Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm schedule.

Work Performed (but not limited to):

  • Triage calls resolving problems within scope; gather relevant information and coordinate follow-up with providers to develop plan and convey plan back to patients.  Attend outpatient clinic as needed weekly. Document communication in Maestrocare and manage inbasket messages regarding care. 
  • Field pages from outside clinics and patient/families on rotational basis (daytime hours only).
  • Prior authorizations and drafting letters of medical necessity
  • Coordinate renewal of outpatient prescriptions
  • Round on inpatients with attending physicians as needed and facilitate coordination of care to outpatient.
  • Help coordinate diagnostic testing and outpatient appointments here at Duke, or at an outside facilities

  • Multitask in myriad ways - document assessments, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status, access nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients, independently seek out resources and work collaboratively. Educate patients and families in accordance with the nursing plan of care. Relationship management with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (or higher) OR Associate's Degree in Nursing OR Nursing Diploma program.
  • Twelve months of appropriate clinical experience is required. 

***All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A solid background in Pediatric Nursing, specifically neurology
  • Experience with telephone triage or managed care coordination
  • Strong oral /written communication skills, software navigation abilities (EPIC experience preferred)
  • Good organizational skills
  • Flexible attitude with the ability to function both independently and as a team member, assisting patients/ families through home care coordination and in the clinic setting
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership and others

Licensure and Certification Required:

  • Current registration with North Carolina State Board of Nursing as a registered professional nurse OR current compact RN licensure to practice in the state of North Carolina required.
  • BLS Certification required
