Summary:
Assists the Medical Technologists and Technicians in a variety of pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical procedures. Primary duties include monitoring the pneumatic tube system and other established routes of specimen entry into the laboratory. Processing and distributing specimens to various departments, performing clerical duties by entering physician orders into the LIS system, prioritizing, and combining orders appropriately, and answering telephones. Operates, monitors, and maintains basic laboratory equipment. Assists in centrifugation of specimens, loading samples for analysis, performing manual testing, documentation of critical values, issuing blood products, urine culture setups, inventory management, and stocking as well as maintaining a safe and clean work environment.

Responsibilities:

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant provides accurate and timely laboratory services for the patients, other laboratory personnel, nursing staff and medical staff of the hospital, as well as outside agencies affiliated to the hospital such as home health agencies, nursing homes, and physician offices.

EDUCATION

  • High School Graduate or equivalent

EXPERIENCE
  • Experience in a hospital setting or high patient volume clinical setting. In lieu of experience, a candidate who has completed a phlebotomy program or at least 3 months of a CLS program may be considered.

LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION
  • Not Required

OTHER SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic computer skills. Strong communication, cooperation, and teamwork skills. 
  • Customer focused. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Due to indirect or direct contact, you may be at risk for exposure to tuberculosis, blood borne pathogens (which includes HIV and Hepatitis B), and/or other potentially infectious diseases. Exposure to various chemical hazards. Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning). Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distraction and stress.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Walking and standing throughout entire shift. High finger and manual dexterity. High color discrimination. Ability to do moderate lifting 50lbs and carry 25 pounds. Responsible for lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects
