About the Education Department

The Met's Department of Education-dedicated to making art meaningful and accessible for everyone-is central to the mission of the Museum. The Department is a national and international leader in museum-based education and public programming, pushing boundaries through continuous innovation and experimentation. In-person and virtual programs include high school and college internships that promote career development and diversity; PreK-12 educator programs that train teachers to integrate art into curricula across disciplines; lectures and symposia that feature preeminent artists and scholarship; daily tours in multiple languages, and so much more.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As the Associate Educator, Academic and Research Programs, , you will oversee the development and implementation of programs to engage undergraduate and graduate students through internships, gallery programs, and faculty programs. You will lead, plan and develop the Museum's Internship Program that includes both short- and long-term internships across Museum departments. You will develop outreach strategies to engage prospective interns, and oversee the internship application and supervisor training process.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Actively contribute new research and practice-based knowledge to the museum education field, serving as a resource for students and peers.

  • Plan, develop and implement the Museum-wide Internship Program, which includes summer, long-term, and semester-based internships.

  • Lead, oversee and implement the Museum Seminar (MuSe) Program for summer and long-term interns, including planning and training the cohort for gallery teaching, and supporting interns' learning and professional development.

  • Administer long-term internships within the MuSe Program, collaborating with individual departments and supervisors on training plans and the application/interview process.

  • Oversee the intern application process, including recruiting supervisors, reviewing projects/plans, supporting best practices for evaluating and interviewing interns, and managing a Museum-wide Internship Review Committee

  • Develop marketing and outreach strategies for promoting and diversifying the internship program and conduct evaluations to review program effectiveness

  • Plan, administer and lead The Observant Eye Program, the annual Career Insights event, and related programs

  • Co-plan and lead programs for faculty in collaboration with the Educator in Charge and other ARP staff

  • Oversee program budgets; evaluate programs and prepare donor reports.

  • Supervise an Assistant Educator, and work with them to guide/oversee college engagement, an annual Fashion Design Competition, and College Night

  • Assist other Education teams as requested.

  • Other duties as needed.

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.A. in art history or museum education

  • Minimum 5 years' experience working in art museums

  • Demonstrated knowledge of current theories and practices pertaining to adult learning, gallery-based teaching and other forms of museum education and informal learning.

  • Understanding of the potential of digital learning and social media tools for college/adult audiences

  • Knowledge and understanding of undergraduate and graduate student audiences and the academic community; experience teaching in a university setting preferred.

  • Demonstrated excellence teaching with original works of art in a gallery setting for a variety of audiences, including adults, and training others in gallery-based teaching practices.

  • Evidence of collaborative skills and experience leading teams through complex projects.

  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to multitask.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to effectively and professionally communicate with different constituencies, verbally and in writing.

  • Excellent communicator and ability to effectively maintain dozens of key relationships within diverse museum departments.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills to supervise and mentor interns.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, experience with database systems, including Excel and solid computer skills required.,

  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours

COMPENSATION RANGE:

  • Pay Range: $85,000.00 - $90,000.00 / Annually

The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.
