Union Pacific Railroad
Union Pacific Railroad
Company Overview

America’s railroad was built by diverse hands – from Chinese track gangs to Irish immigrants and Civil War veterans (both Black and White) as well as Pawnee scouts who protected the lines. After 160 years, our vision remains to Build America. More importantly, our mission is to build a diverse and equitable America. That is why Union Pacific has goals and action plans in place to reach 40% minority employees and double its women employee by 2030.

Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is based on our desire to create an environment where people can be their best, personally and professionally. From an employee’s perspective, a diverse culture increases engagement, improves morale and supports safety. From a business perspective, diversity improves the company’s decision making, problem solving, and strategic thinking, which translates into a competitive advantage with bottom-line results.

Union Pacific Railroad is one of America’s premier transportation and logistics companies, linking 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country and serving many of the fastest-growing U.S. cities. Generations of Americans have built successful careers at Union Pacific and in the process, they’ve helped build a nation – delivering lumber for our homes, food for our tables, energy for our power plants and the countless raw materials and finished goods that supply the American way of life.

Our diverse heritage compels us to stand for opportunity.

Our desired future demands we stand for equity.

Our shared humanity implores us to stand for justice.

Commitment to Supplier Diversity

Although Union Pacific was the first Class I railroad to implement a supplier diversity program nearly 40 years ago, we determined we can do more. Supplier diversity introduces new products, services and solutions that might otherwise be overlooked. It’s an effective way to promote innovation while driving price and service competition. It many cases it’s an investment in the very communities in which we operate, promoting job creation at a local level.

We looked at potential areas of growth and set an aggressive goal to grow our total diverse supplier spending another 25% to nearly $530 million in 2021.
