The Department of Corrections, Division of Health and Rehabilitation Services (HARS), is recruiting for a Physician Assistant/Advanced Practice Registered Nurse 2 Physician Assistant/Advanced Practice Registered Nurse 2 (Lead Psychiatric PA/APRN) based in Anchorage, Alaska.

What you will be doing:In collaboration with and under the supervision of the Chief Mental Health Officer, this position will:
- Provide leadership and supervision to a team of Advanced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners, as well as, oversee quality assurance for services they provide.
- Identify, assess, and respond appropriately to those with mental health disorders, symptoms associated with drug and alcohol use, and suicidal inmates.
- Care for the psychiatric needs of mentally ill offenders located across the state either in-person or via telehealth for rural locations.
- Prescribe Schedule II-V drugs as appropriate in accordance with departmental standards, State licensing requirements and prescriptive authority by the Alaska Board of Nursing or the Alaska Medical Board.

This position will work closely with teams of administrative staff, correctional officers, mental health clinicians, and medical staff. Who we are looking for:We are looking for an employee with the following desired strengths and qualifications:
- Eligible for authorization to practice as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in the State of Alaska.
- At least one year of experience providing a full spectrum of psychiatric care, including but not limited to conducting psychiatric evaluations, providing teatment for individuals with severe and persistent mental illnesses, and prescribing psychotropic medication.
- Understanding of and skills in psychiatric diagnosis, including differential diagnosis of psychiatric illnesses.
- Leadership skills, including ability to motivate and positively influence a professional team.
- Knowledge of evidence-based practices, including techniques on assessing behavior, emotional, social and psychological and environmental problems.
- Ability to maintain composure during stressful situations, including recognizing and responding positively to cultural differences, lifestyles and values.
Minimum Qualifications
Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska;
AND
Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities in:
* Program management, administration, and supervisory principles and techniques to effectively oversee operations to meet program goals;
* Supervising and training subordinate personnel; prioritizing, assigning, and directing work; and monitoring and evaluating performance;
* Instructing and mentoring lower level medical team members in training situations to achieve full proficiency.
equivalent to those typically gained by:
Three years of responsible Physician Assistant and/or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse experience.
Special Note:
Candidates not currently licensed by the State of Alaska, who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure as a Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska may apply for vacancies in this job class. Applicants qualifying under this option may receive a conditional job offer; however, proof of licensure will be required prior to final appointment and reporting for duty.
Some positions require the successful applicant to pass a background investigation, including fingerprinting, as a prerequisite to employment. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.
Some positions require the successful applicant to provide proof they are free from active pulmonary tuberculosis at the time of hire. Employees may be required to be screened annually. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.
Shift assignments and on-call availability may be required.
Some positions require application for and renewal of a DEA Registration Number with various designation(s) from the United States Drug Enforcement Administration allowing them to write prescriptions for a variety of controlled substances as a government health care provider. These positions will additionally register with the Alaska Prescription Drug Monitoring Program.
In addition to maintaining Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse licensing requirements, some positions may require maintenance of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Basic Life Support, registration with a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, National Provider Identifier number, and others as appropriate.
