Duties

As a Lead Microbiologist, you will:

• Ensure that the organization's strategic plan, mission, vision, and values are communicated to the team and integrated into the team's strategies, goals, objectives, work plans and work products and services.
• Coach the team in the selection and application of appropriate problem solving methods and techniques,
  provide advice on work methods, practices and procedures, and assist the team and/or individual members in identifying the parameters of a viable solution.
• Lead the team in: identifying, distributing and balancing workload and tasks among employees in accordance
  with established work flow, skill level and/or occupational specialization; making adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities to ensure timely accomplishment of assigned team tasks; and ensuring that each employee has an integral role in developing the final team product.
• Serve as coach, facilitator and/or negotiator in coordinating team initiatives and in consensus building activities among
  team members.
• Plan, prioritize, initiate, design, conduct, coordinate, direct and lead basic and applied research studies.
• Develop new methods for and collects, analyzes, organizes and records experimental data appropriate for publication and future reference by others.
• Recreate experiments describing protocols, methods, and procedures used; summaries of data obtained; and descriptions of any problems or unusual situations encountered in carrying out the experiment.

Due to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) process enhancement to use Shared Certificates throughout the Agency, some of the requirements below may differ:

Basic Qualifications: Degree: A degree in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: leading laboratory staff in planning, conducting, designing and executing research studies; developing laboratory safety and quality controls to ensure compliance with management systems, programs, and regulatory guidelines for clinical testing.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
